Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of New Brunswick! At UNB Earth Sciences, we are passionate about understanding how our planet works and preparing the next generation of geoscientists and geological engineers to address today’s global challenges. With guidance from dedicated faculty and staff, our students study the dynamic processes that shape Earth and influence society while opening the door to a World of Opportunities and rewarding careers in geoscience and geological engineering. We believe the best way to learn geoscience is through experience. Students gain hands-on training through immersive field schools, advanced laboratory research, and collaborations with industry and government partners. Our programs emphasize real-world learning and practical scientific skill that help students build professional networks and launch successful careers across Canada and around the world! Our department is home to innovative research and world-class facilities. Faculty members are internationally recognized experts in areas including mineral resources, environmental geoscience, tectonics, volcanology, energy, climate science, remote sensing, the arctic, and planetary science. Students can participate in cutting-edge research ranging from critical minerals for the clean energy transition to meteorites and lunar materials at the Planetary and Space Science Centre (PASSC). Beyond the laboratory and the field, our department serves as a vital hub for geoscience communication, sharing Earth science with the wider community through the Quartermain Earth Science Centre. The QESC supports public outreach, museum exhibits, and educational programs that inspire curiosity about our planet and highlight the essential role of geoscience in building a sustainable future. At UNB Earth Sciences, students join a welcoming and inclusive community where curiosity, discovery, and real-world impact come together.
